A walk through Berlin East Side Gallery
Berlin is a bit of a mysterious place for me. I was very young when the wall fell and Germany reunited but being born in the 80's I feel that I still absorbed quite a bit of the Cold War hysteria and like a good American I grew up believing the propaganda that the communists were eventually going to try to take us over.
Staying at the Eastern & Western Comfort boat hostel brought us up close and personal to the symbol of communism for me; THE WALL. The hostel sits right next to the largest preserved stretch of the wall still standing and consists of a mixture of murals for roughly 1300m. Here are some of the favorites that I took:
The East Side Gallery is one of the largest tourist attractions in Berlin, so if you are interested in going I would highly suggest either first thing in the morning (we noticed the buses rolling in around 9am) or at night. If interested, you can read more about the history of the gallery here.
See you next time!
