What's in a Day?

For basically the whole year leading up to our launch I was snooping on other families doing similar adventures, mostly on Instagram. I loved seeing the paths they chose and the adventures they had. Sometimes they would post pictures of the more mundane things, like sitting in an airport or doing homeschool work wherever they were that day. I still like following these families and grabbing ideas from them, we've learned about several sweet places to see.

But after following these families for a long while I was hungry for more! What did they really do in a span of 24 hours? How did they pass the hours and minutes of a full day?

Prior to leaving my job last spring, I heard about a time study from a podcast I listen to occasionally, @beforebreakfast. She told me to track my week in increments of 30 minutes. This, she said, would give me a better view of where I spent my time and how I prioritized what I did. So I did this in a little journal I kept with me. After the week was up I categorized what I did (work, drive, exercise, read, tv, playtime w/H, cook, etc.) Once I categorized it all I tallied the time. From there I saw my total time and how I spent it across the week. Let me tell you, it is enlightening. After I got over the dismay of how much time I put into certain activities, I realized that I had control over much of the time given to me. I had control to choose what to do in those minutes and hours - why hadn't I been learning other languages and training for a marathon! Buckets of time! :)

I tell you this to a) give you, the reader, a little insight into my mind and b) to tell you that I am going to try to do the same thing now, but for the family! This I will do over the span of a 'typical' week on the trail for us. My hope is to answer the very big question that I asked way back last year 'but what does a traveling family actually do all day?'.

I loved doing this activity for myself, although I did have to remind myself to actually track and write it down. Have you done something similar? If not I encourage you to give it a try with me :) What do you think we will find out!!
